Load calculations explained

A load calculation compares the demand of everything on the panel with the size of the service. Adding an ADU, a heat pump, an EV charger or a kitchen can push an older service past its limit.

Reviewers often ask for a calculation when a project adds major loads or a subpanel. If the numbers show the service is too small, the plan notes the upgrade so the electrician and utility can plan for it.

Frequently asked questions

Does a homeowner need electrical plans?

For small work, many offices do not. For ADUs, additions, service upgrades and commercial spaces, an electrical plan is usually part of the permit set.

Can you design a subpanel for an ADU?

Yes. We show the feeder, subpanel location and circuits, and include a load calculation when required.

Do you need photos of my panel?

Yes. A clear photo of the panel label and breakers helps us confirm the existing service.
